Yr 7, 8 and 9 Homework  Projects and Skills for Life

It is important to note that subjects and subject staff intend homework in years 7 to 9 to be diverse in nature, focusing on more project based work which may be on-going over a number of weeks.

Skills such as self-management, problem solving, teamwork and effective communication are important components in our curriculum that seek to prepare young people for the future. The development of these Skills for life are essential if our students are to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.

The focus of such project-based work will be to encourage and develop your son/ward’s independent study skills. As a school, we feel that developing independent study skills early, will equip our students with the skills necessary to undertake coursework in their GCSE subjects throughout years 10 and 11.

We believe asking students to search for knowledge and information themselves, collate it and present it in their own way, are highly necessary skills for life which will be needed in the workplace once they leave school. Yr 7, 8 and 9 students will complete homework projects for all subjects.

HOMEWORK PROJECTS

  • Homework will be set on subject rotation which is explained on the Homework Schedule included in the Homework Projects;
  • The layout of the HWK project(s) are structured to help students manage their homework.
  • Students will complete three homework tasks per subject per term;
  • All homework must be recorded in the homework diaries;
  • One piece of homework will be marked by the class teacher per term, other pieces of homework will be peer and self-assessed.
  • All Homework projects contain a literacy, numeracy, reading list and stretch & challenge task
  • Teachers may also set additional homework or deviate from the projects if they feel this is appropriate to ensure the needs of the class are fully met.

Stretch and Challenge

Students will be encouraged to push themselves, completing more tasks where they see fit. If they have a particular interest or gift in a given area they should be encouraged to complete the Stretch and Challenge task.

Homework Responsibilities

Students to:
•    Carry a homework diary at all times in order to record the homework.
•    Write all homework set by the class teacher in their diaries, complete it and hand it in on time.
•    Ask parents/guardians to check and sign the homework diary weekly.

Class teachers to:
•    To set and assess homework.
•    Teachers will assess homework once per term.
•    Oversee the recording of homework in diaries by ensuring pupils write their homework into their diaries before they leave the classroom.

Parents:
•    To monitor their son/ward’s homework and homework diary.
•    To check homework is completed and to ensure that it is done.
•    To sign homework diaries each week as per the form tutor program.

Form Tutors:
